Google Search Console: a beginner's guide

Google Search Console (GSC) is a free Google tool that shows how your site performs in search. Without it, SEO is like driving blindfolded. It's the first tool every site owner should set up.

Why it's essential

GSC shows real data straight from Google: which queries you're found for, what position you hold, how many people click and whether Google successfully indexes your pages.

How to set it up

Go to search.google.com/search-console, add your domain and verify ownership (usually via a DNS record or HTML file). Then submit your sitemap.xml.

The most important reports

  • Performance – queries, positions, clicks, CTR.
  • Indexing – which pages are indexed and which aren't (and why).
  • Core Web Vitals – speed and usability metrics.
  • Sitemap – whether Google successfully read your list of pages.
GSC is the only source showing real Google data about your site. Every other tool just estimates.

How to use the data

Find queries where you rank 5–15 – these can often be lifted with little work. Spot pages with many impressions but low CTR – improve their title and description. Fix indexing errors.

Not sure how to read your GSC data? We can analyze it and give you an action plan – get in touch.
