Google Ads basics: how paid Google advertising works
The auction, campaign types and keywords – everything to know before starting with Google Ads.
7 min
Google Ads is a paid advertising system that lets your business appear at the top of Google search and across other Google networks. Unlike SEO, results are immediate, but you pay for each click (PPC – „pay per click“).
How the auction works
Every time someone enters a query, Google runs an instant auction. Your ad's position depends not only on your bid, but also on your Quality Score – the more relevant the ad and page, the less you pay for a higher position.
Campaign types
- Search – text ads in Google results. Best for buying intent.
- Performance Max – automated advertising across all Google channels.
- Display – banners on websites and apps.
- Shopping – products with images (for e-shops).
- YouTube – video advertising.
Keyword match types
It's important to control which queries trigger your ads: broad match (most traffic, least precision), phrase match and exact match (less traffic, most precise). For beginners we recommend phrase or exact match.
Google Ads is the fastest way to get in front of customers. But without proper setup it's easy to spend the budget with no results.
What you need before starting
A clear goal (enquiries, calls, sales), conversion tracking installed and a good landing page. Without conversion tracking you won't know what works.
