On-page SEO: a checklist of the most important elements

On-page SEO is everything you optimize on the page itself so it ranks better. Here's a checklist of the most important elements worth checking on every page.

1. Title tag

The most important on-page element. Include the main keyword near the start, keep it to ~55–60 characters and make it click-worthy. Every page gets a unique title.

2. Meta description

Although it doesn't directly affect rankings, it determines whether people click. ~150 characters, with the keyword and a call to action.

3. Headings (H1–H3)

One H1 per page with the main topic. H2 and H3 break the content logically and help both readers and Google.

4. URL

Short, readable, with the keyword: /seo-services/vilnius/, not /?p=123.

5. Content and keywords

Valuable, thorough content with naturally woven keywords and synonyms. Answer the topic better than competitors.

6. Images and internal links

  • Image alt text and compressed files (speed).
  • Internal links to related pages with descriptive anchor text.
On-page SEO is what you fully control. Fix these basics and every other SEO effort will bring more benefit.
