Keyword research: how to find what your customers search for
A step-by-step guide to finding profitable keywords and understanding search intent.
8 min
Keyword research is the foundation of SEO. Without it you optimize blindly. The goal is simple: understand the words your customers actually use to find your services.
Search intent matters most
Not all keywords are equal. It's important to understand what the person wants:
- Informational: „what is SEO“ – the person is learning.
- Commercial: „best SEO agency“ – comparing options.
- Transactional: „SEO services Vilnius price“ – ready to buy.
The most profitable are usually commercial and transactional keywords – focus on those first.
How to find keywords
- Google autocomplete – start typing a query and watch the suggestions.
- „Related searches“ and „People also ask“ – ideas at the bottom of the page.
- Competitor analysis – which words the leaders rank for.
- Tools – Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, Semrush show search volumes.
Long-tail keywords
Longer, more specific phrases („plumbing services in Kaunas on weekends“) have fewer searches but higher conversion and lower competition. For beginners – gold.
Better to rank first for 20 targeted words than tenth for 200 random ones.
How to prioritize
Weigh three things: search volume, competition and intent. The ideal keyword has enough volume, a realistic chance to rank and clear buying intent.
